To Me To You 2006
string, tripod, tin can, steel pole and compass
When a sound is created the sound waves disperse becoming more and more elongated until we are no longer able to hear the original sound. However, in theory this sound carries on traveling forever. When someone close to us is too far away to talk to we often talk to them as if they are in the same room. One word sentiments or full conversations. The piece consists of a large scale tin can telephone-loud speaker. The aim of the piece is to allow the audience to interact with the piece and the space that it is set in. The viewer is able to say what they like to who they like simply by directing the apparatus in the direction of the intended recipient. This could be someone in next door, or someone in Costa Rica, or some one who doesn’t exist. The hope is that the recipient will eventually hear the sentiments that have been said. The piece relies on optimism.
